At Hardin-Simmons University, we don’t just help you get through those first semesters. We walk with you. From free tutoring and writing workshops to sessions on time management and study skills, HSU gives you real tools to help you find your footing and grow with confidence.

The Strategic Learning Initiative (SLI)

We take that support a step further through the Strategic Learning Initiative (SLI) — a two-hour credit course designed to help you build the skills that carry you through college and beyond. SLI is a semester-long investment in you. It’s built on the belief that education is more than passing classes. It’s about discovering your calling, finding your voice, and preparing to make an impact. Students who enroll in SLI learn how to prioritize, study, communicate, and think critically — skills that matter in the classroom and in life. You’ll practice what you learn immediately, applying strategies to your actual coursework. The result? A smoother transition, stronger grades, and the confidence that comes with knowing you have a plan.

How The SLI Class Works

The class meets for one hour twice per week.

• First half: A new learning strategy is introduced and discussed in a seminar format.
• Second half: You apply that strategy directly to assignments from your other courses.

Each week, you’ll also meet one-on-one with your instructor or peer academic coach for 30 minutes. These conversations give you space to reflect, ask questions, and build strategies that fit you. It’s not one-size-fits all — it’s personalized support to help you grow in your own way.

Block Tuition: Make It Work For You

Your block tuition includes up to 34 credit hours per year. You can use two of those credit hours for SLI, a class designed to help you get more out of
the rest. It’s a simple way to make your schedule work for you, not the other way around. Two credit hours can give you the tools to save time, lower stress, and protect the investment you and your family are making in your education.

College isn’t just about showing up for class. It’s about setting yourself up for a future you’re prepared to navigate. SLI helps you do that from day one.
