phialphaThrough Knowledge - The Challenge is to Serve

The purpose of Phi Alpha Honor Society is to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.

    HSU - Sigma Beta Chapter

The Sigma Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Honor Society for Social Work was established in November 2011 in order to provide social work students with additional opportunities to promote humanitarianism, human and civil rights, and social and economic justice through participation in Chapter projects, events and activities. As members in good standing, our students can apply for Phi Alpha awards and scholarships. This is a student lead organization with student phiAlpha2officers and faculty advisors to guide and direct the organization. For more information about Phi Alpha, please go to their website http://phialpha.org/

For more information about HSU’s Sigma Beta Chapter, please review the Sigma Beta Consitution and By-laws. To apply, complete the Sigma Beta Application and send to Melissa Milliorn at mmilliorn@hsutx.edu.

Phi Alpha Sigma Beta Officer’s 2016-17

    •   Emily Gurley - President
Emily GurleyMy name is Emily (Fitzhugh) Gurley and I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve as President for the HSU Sigma Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society! I am a junior Social Work major and Leadership minor from Abilene, Texas. My family has a long history at Hardin-Simmons, so I grew up coming to campus and knowing its mission. When it came time to select a college, I knew Hardin-Simmons would fit me perfectly. I love Hardin-Simmons and the caring connections with professors and students. I have developed a passion for serving people through my future profession. My Leadership Studies complement my social work program because I have the confidence to organize, advocate, and persuade others to "be the change" we want to see in the world. Also at HSU, I met, dated, and married my sweet husband, Tyler. I would not trade the memories I have made at HSU for anything. My volunteer experience includes serving as a “Big” for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, advocating for Noah Project, and serving on Mission Teams in Ecuador, Ireland, and inner city Dallas. I am an active member at Beltway Park Church, where I volunteer with the middle school youth. Professionally, I am interested in working with children and families and I am very passionate about helping at-risk children through social work in the schools or in the foster care system. I am excited about working with others who share my passion for this field through Social Work and Sigma Beta.
    • Alex Ortiz - Vice President
Alex OrtizMy name is Alex Ortiz and I have the honor of serving as the Vice President for the HSU Sigma Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society this year! I am a senior Social Work student from Chicago, IL. I previously attended another college in Illinois where I was Hall President, part of a sorority group (social club as you know them), a peer mentor, freshman advisor, and a member of our Habitat for Humanity group. I transferred to HSU last year and in my time here I have volunteered at the Day Nursery of Abilene and Abilene High School. I am currently completing my field placement at the Department of State Health Services in the Children with Special Health Care Needs Program. I am passionate about working with children and learning about new cultures. In my free time I enjoy baking, hunting, watching/playing baseball, and traveling. I am excited to get this club active again and to see where it takes us. Congrats to all of you for your hard work in the Social Work program!
    • Karina Anderson – Secretary/Treasurer
Karina AndersonMy name is Karina Anderson and I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve as Secretary/Treasurer for the HSU Sigma Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society. I am a senior social work major, from right here in Abilene, Texas! I am involved on campus through the Social Work Club and in the community. I volunteer weekly at Meals on Wheels and have volunteered at The Palm House in the girls mentoring program. I am completing my field placement at Betty Hardwick - Early Childhood Intervention, as I have a passion for children with disabilities and making a difference in their lives. God has called me to this profession and has spoken to me through the challenges of life and I believe it is my turn to give back through Social Work practice. My goal is to advocate and empower those who cannot advocate for themselves, or to assist those who do not know what to do when they face life's many challenges. I can't wait to see how God uses the HSU Sigma Beta Chapter this year to bless and serve Hardin-Simmons and our community!
