May 2022 Graduation Spotlight: Tommy Couch

May 16, 2022 Mary Burke

Hailing from Hubbard, TX, Tommy Couch came to Hardin-Simmons University as a freshman to run track while majoring in computer science and business. During his sophomore year, Tommy was hired as a student worker for the Visual Media Department. Students who work for the Visual Media Department are exposed to a unique job environment where they learn everything from photography and videography to editing, project management, operating a drone, and setting up and tearing down major campus events, like graduation.

Tommy loved his new job and decided to no longer run track. “I got to experience what it was like being a collegiate athlete, but I wanted to pursue my job more,” he said in an interview.

Over the next two years, Tommy would be seen at most campus events, capturing photographs and videos to be used in marketing materials and for storytelling purposes. By his senior year, Tommy held the title of Senior Producer of Visual Content, acting as a mentor for other student workers and the person Visual Media staff could rely upon. “I enjoy the leadership role I’ve taken on,” he added when speaking about his role.

If you did not know Tommy personally, you more than likely saw him with a camera in hand, capturing the various events on campus. His one job introduced him to countless opportunities and people. “My job was involved in everything on campus. I worked with social clubs, athletic events, dining services, alumni functions, Board of Trustees meetings, donor events, really everything and everyone.”

After graduation, Tommy is looking forward to giving back to Hardin-Simmons with his time, now, and money as he grows his career. He wants to serve on the Board of Young Associates and, years down the road, serve as a Board of Trustee. Tommy said with a smile, “I want to come back to campus and have my name on a building.”

Tommy’s advice to HSU students is, “Don’t be afraid to go up to someone, shake their hand, and introduce yourself. I wouldn’t be following my passion had I not gone up to my boss, then stranger, and introduced myself, landing the job with Visual Media.”

Congratulations, Tommy!
