Evidence of Education: Maria Siller’s Footprints from HSU to Forensic Science
Maria Siller’s successful foray into the forensic science field reflects her lifelong fascination with criminal justice and her time at Hardin-Simmons University.
Between watching Law and Order SVU and being inspired by a high school teacher, Maria set out to be a forensic scientist. She attended HSU where she grew under the tutelage of instrumental faculty members like Dr. Stafford and Dr. Brown, earning a Bachelor of Behavioral Science in 2017.
“Dr. Brown is an amazing figure in my life, someone I can still count on for advice,” Maria said. “She has really encouraged me.”
…I am forever thankful that she did…
From 2017 to 2020, Maria began her career as an Adult Probation Officer with the Taylor County Community Supervision and Corrections Department.
However, Maria felt drawn toward a more specialized area of the field, returning to HSU to pursue a Master of Science in Criminal Justice with a specialization in forensic science, graduating in 2023.
“The reason I went back for my master’s degree was because of Dr. Brown,” Maria said. “She really pushed for that, and I am forever thankful that she did.”
That decision was a turning point.
Breaking into forensic science proved to be difficult without any prior experience, but Maria remained persistent.
“I had a lot of agencies tell me I didn’t have the experience they were looking for,” she said. “And I think getting my master’s made my current employer consider me more.”
Maria’s perseverance paid off when she was hired by the department in Austin, Texas, giving her the opportunity to enter the field she had long envisioned.
She began working as a Forensic Scientist I in 2023 and was promoted to Forensic Scientist II in April of 2026. In her current role, she performs critical work at crime scenes, often in unpredictable and demanding conditions.
Despite the challenges, Maria finds meaning in helping others. Whether responding to serious crimes or assisting victims, her skills provide reassurance and support to those in need.
“At the scenes, I’ve watched people’s moods change because they feel like I’m taking them seriously and that something is being done to help them,” she said. “I find that the most rewarding.”
Maria has also distinguished herself in the field by becoming one of the first 15 individuals in Texas to earn a Crime Scene Investigation Analyst license through the Texas Forensic Science Commission. Currently, she is working towards her International Association of Identification (IAI) certificate, further demonstrating her commitment to professional excellence.
Looking ahead, Maria plans to continue advancing within forensic science, with goals of moving into higher-level roles and mentoring others as she was mentored along the way. Her journey underscores the impact of strong guidance, grittiness, and education.
From her childhood dreams to the front lines of forensic investigation, Maria’s story serves as evidence of the power of learning and the lasting influence of HSU in shaping meaningful careers.
