• Student Life History

  • Student Life has been an ever-evolving, critical area of the University. Some of the foundation for the division was set by HSU English professor and former Vice President Dr. Michael Whitehorn (1991-2012) and former Deans of Students Linda Carleton (1991-2003) and Forrest McMillan (2003-2014) during their service to the university. In 2006, the first Student Activities Coordinator position was created, and it was initially staffed by Lindsey Snodgrass Koch, followed by Brittany Suell (2010-2014) and Michael LeRoux (2014-present). In 2013, Dr. Rozeboom was brought in as Vice President. As a result, the scope and direction of Student Life changed, including the introduction of living-learning communities into Residence Life and a shift from “dorm directors” to Residence Directors. Dr. Rozeboom emphasized learning outside the classroom and a strong partnership with academic affairs. Soon thereafter, Stacey Martin was named as Associate Dean for Student Engagement. In 2014, Brian Dawson joined the team as Dean of Students. With no new dollars, two critical positions were also created – a part-time University Counselor and a Coordinator for Multicultural Affairs. Changes in personnel often signal a “sending out” of people who have been shaped by HSU, and new Student Affairs professionals – scholar-practitioners and educators – have been hired to engage in best practices and to continue to shape the HSU culture. Student Life strives to keep student success at the center of all that we do!
