Why I Chose My Major: Worship Leadership

About Alex

Alex is a senior at Hardin-Simmons University who grew up in Argyle, Texas, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Over the past four years, he has diversified his portfolio by participating in a variety of groups on campus.

He is currently the president of the Kappa Phi Omega fraternity, an active member of a men’s social club, and an HSU Instagram ambassador.

Previously, he served as a four-year worship intern for the HSU Chapel Band, a resident assistant, a choir member, and a member of Hunters, Gatherers, and Travelers.

Growing up, Alex didn’t know what he wanted to be. However, he said the Lord used his high school years to shape him with the gifts necessary to spread His word.

Alex first heard about HSU thanks to a targeted email that sparked his curiosity and led him to research the school further.

“It looked intriguing, and I am very thankful I had checked it that day. Though I felt like I was too late in the game, the awesome offices at HSU made sure I was given an education enlightened by faith as soon as possible,” Alex said.

Worship Leadership at HSU

Once on campus, Alex decided to major in worship leadership because the program allowed him to express both his love for music and ministry.

The program also stood out to him because it challenged students by pushing them out of their comfort zones and was taught by professors with real ministry experience.

“Not only did it offer hands-on experience, but it included rich, foundational classes that are not your traditional ‘read-out-the-textbook’ classes,” he said.

Alex credited Tiffany Stotts, Craig Stotts, and Matt Ellis—professors in the department—for having a major impact on his life and academic career.

He also said the HSU learning environment has helped him grow in knowledge not only as a student but also as a leader.

When asked about the benefits of his major, he said the class structure allows students to gain hands-on experience and excel in their desired fields.

Future Aspirations and Advice to Worship Leadership Majors

When asked about his career goals, Alex said he “would love to be a part of a full-time worship ministry, whether that be as a worship leader or a music director.”

He added that he hopes to be remembered for loving the people in his life more than anything involving his musical career.

Alex encourages aspiring worship leadership majors to get involved in the community.

“The more you get involved, the more you will be poured into by others,” Alex said.
