Why I Chose My Major: Music Education

About Lauren
Lauren is a junior at Hardin-Simmons University from Hewitt, Texas, located in McLennan County.
On campus, she enjoys participating in HSU’s choir and theatrical groups, while also being involved in multiple student organizations and sororities, including Tri Phi and Alpha Psi Omega.
As a member of the Student Engagement club (SABERS), Lauren has helped host numerous activities to promote student inclusion on campus.
She is also a part of Stampede, HSU’s freshman welcome week, where she helps put on many activities to welcome first-year students to campus in a fun and innovative way.
Finally, she is the co-director of SING, an annual event hosted by HSU, which gives students across the 40 acres a chance to showcase their talents.
Lauren knew that she wanted to teach children since fourth grade, because of an opportunity she had earned that allowed her to be the school’s principal for a day.
“One of my duties was to go read a book to one of the kindergarten classes. When it was time for me to leave, I had only read half of the book, but I was having so much fun that I decided to stay and finish it. Ever since that day, I have been pursuing a career in education,” Lauren recalled.
However, she did not know that her gift of music and passion for singing would lead her down the path of music education until her junior year of high school.
Lauren was introduced to HSU through a conversation she had with one of the university’s admissions counselors during an event at her high school.
“He started telling me about the music program and how he was a member of it when he went to HSU. It sounded really cool, so I scheduled a tour and fell in love,” she stated.
Music education at HSU
During her time as a member of HSU’s School of Music, Lauren has been immersed in the concepts of education and music. She has been taught various strategies when educating school-aged children, while also improving her vocal ability through lesson-based classes.
She has loved being part of this program because of the way her professors teach the study of music and allow for impactful, firsthand experiences.
Lauren credited Dr. Romines and Dr. Brooks for having a significant impact on her during her academic career, thanks to the exceptional instruction and care they provided to their students.
“It has been an amazing learning environment. I have gotten to do so much here, and with it being a smaller campus, I have gotten more opportunities than I could have hoped for,” she exclaimed.
Future aspirations
Lauren aspires to become a well-known choir conductor for a large school district that dominates all competitions.
She also wants to be remembered for being a hard-working member of HSU’s music program and a perfect representation of what a caring person is.
Advice to music education majors
