The Strength of the HSU Ring

April 7, 2025

The Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) Official Class Ring is more than a piece of jewelry—it is a symbol of tradition, achievement, and lifelong connection. Since its introduction in 2004 by HSU and the Alumni Association, the ring has embodied the university’s rich heritage, allowing alumni to carry a tangible reminder of their time at HSU wherever they go.

A Tradition Revived

The official HSU ring, introduced in 2004, restored a long-lost tradition. While single-design class rings were once a common identifier of HSU graduates, the practice faded in the 1970s as students began choosing from multiple designs, making rings more of a personal accessory than a shared university symbol. Additionally, rings became available to individuals outside the university, diluting their significance.

By reintroducing an official ring program, HSU joined universities nationwide in reaffirming the class ring as a mark of academic accomplishment and school pride. The single-design ring unites graduates and ensures that every recipient wears a piece of HSU’s legacy.

Earning the Ring

The HSU Official Class Ring is reserved for students and alumni who have met the university’s academic standards. Students may order their ring at the beginning of the semester in which they are graduating. A valid application for graduation is required to be on file with the Registrar’s Office prior to sizing.

A defining tradition of the ring is its ceremonial turning. Before graduation, students wear their rings with the HSU seal facing inward, symbolizing their time as students. Upon receiving their degrees, they turn the rings outward, signifying their transition into the world beyond HSU, ready to embrace new opportunities and challenges.

The journey to the ring begins even earlier with the Sophomore Ring Dunk, a tradition that started in 2008 to celebrate students reaching the halfway point in their HSU experience. Held every Spring, the event symbolizes progress and connection to the HSU community. Students receive a keychain ring and dunk their hand into a bucket of purple dye, signifying they are well on their way to joining the ranks of HSU alumni. This lighthearted yet meaningful tradition reinforces the lifelong bond between students and their alma mater.

Dedication to Health Care

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program began awarding rings in 2007, and the Physician Assistant (PA) program followed in 2019. With the introduction of the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program in 2025, the same ring design will continue, with the first DMSc cohort receiving their rings in Fall 2025. When these programs were established, they chose a ring design that emphasizes their commitment to health care rather than the broader traditions of HSU. Instead, their rings reflect their dedication to their respective health professions while still honoring their connection to Hardin-Simmons University.

The official ring design reflects the university’s heritage, featuring the university seal, Logsdon Chapel’s stained-glass window, and program-specific elements such as the DPT’s caduceus and PA’s health profession symbols. This custom-designed ring symbolizes many of the things HSU students hold dear, including our Christian foundation and representations of our beautiful campus.

Celebrating the Achievement

HSU honors this momentous occasion each semester with its Official Ring Ceremony, where students receive their rings in a formal event recognizing their hard work and dedication. The next ceremony, celebrating the Class of 2025, is set for Friday, April 11, 2025, with multiple sessions throughout the day to accommodate all participants.

For HSU graduates, the ring is more than a keepsake—it is a statement of pride, a link to a beloved alma mater, and a symbol of the journey that we are all connected for life.
