Knight Lectures to Feature Rev. Dr. Jaime Clark-Soles

Logsdon Seminary is pleased to announce that Rev. Dr. Jaime Clark-Soles will be speaking at the George Knight Lectures on Nov. 6. Dr. Clark-Soles’ will speak to the topic “Dying to Live” in chapel at 9:30 a.m. and the topic “From Death to Life: The Gospel of John” in Logsdon Chapel at 7:00 p.m. There will be a lunch and panel discussion with Dr. Clark-Soles at noon in the Johnson Building Multipurpose Room. “If a university education, especially a Christian one, cannot help us learn how to die well, and, therefore, LIVE well, then it should close up shop immediately,” said Dr. Clark-Soles.

Dr. Clark-Soles hopes the audience will consider their lives from the perspective of their death. More specifically, they will want to die/live well with a legacy and help others to do the same.

Dr. Clark-Soles is Professor of New Testament and Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Her particular areas of expertise and publication include The Johannine Literature; Evil, Suffering, Death, and Afterlife; Disability Studies and the Bible; Women in the Bible; and Immersion trips to Israel and Palestine.

She is the author of numerous books and essays including “Reading John for Dear Life: A Spiritual Walk with the Fourth Gospel”; “Engaging the Word: The New Testament and the Christian Believer”; “Death and the Afterlife in the New Testament”; and “Scripture Cannot Be Broken: The Social Function of the Use of Scripture in the Fourth Gospel”.

Dr. Clark-Soles serves on the editorial board of Teaching in Theology and Religion as well as the Journal of Disability and Religion. She appears in the 2012 documentary “Hellbound?” and has an essay in the new book “Hellrazed?”  As an ordained American Baptist minister, she has served in both parish and hospice settings.

About the Knight Lectures
The George Knight Lectures, which are held annually in the fall, bring to campus noted biblical scholars to address themes promoting biblical scholarship in the church.
Dr. George W. Knight came to Hardin-Simmons University in 1976 from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he had served as instructor of New Testament and Greek. He was subsequently appointed as the first Cook-Derrick Chair of Bible and Greek at HSU. He established HSU’s archaeology program and led more than 20 archaeological expeditions to Israel and Greece, eventually becoming a field supervisor. He holds degrees from Louisiana College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received his Ph.D. in 1973.

Dr. Knight has distinguished himself in his commitment to teaching and scholarship and his contribution to the larger life of the University and of the community in which he lives. Dr. Knight retired from the HSU faculty in 2002.
