HSU Student Gracie Ridings is Recognized at KCACTF

March 26, 2024 Mason Duebner

Earlier this spring, the Hardin-Simmons University theatre department contributed to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). Held yearly, this event recognizes and showcases the work of talented theatre students. Gracie Ridings, an HSU senior, was recognized for her scenic design and original play. Due to her talent in both, she was asked to serve on a playwriting cohort for the Region 6 KCACTF.

Gracie describes her original play, Platonic at the Park, as “a one-act play that pokes fun at the idea of a ‘one true love.'” Platonic at the Park’s story is entirely original, written by Gracie. She largely attributes her playwriting ability to Charles Hughes, HSU’s Visiting Instructor of English, who offers workshops for interested students. In addition to Mr. Hughes, Gracie shared, “I also owe a lot to my friend Price Payne [2023 graduate of HSU], which is part of the reason I realized how serious I am about playwriting and has been so supportive ever since.”

Gracie was also recognized for her scenic design, specifically for the sets she designed for the HSU Fall 2023 production Of Women and Wallace. Set design is an essential part of producing and designing plays. The HSU theatre department strives to help prospective directors and playwrights feel comfortable in all aspects of play design.

Though the Region 6 KCACTF is over for this year, the theatre department is already preparing students for the opportunity to attend and be recognized in the spring of 2025. In addition to the prior workshops and classes that Gracie attended, HSU plans to offer a playwriting course taught by Mr. Hughes in the fall of 2024. If you are interested in preparing for KCACTF, the HSU theatre department is happy to set you on the road to success.
