Houston-Lantrip Center Evolves to Expand Impact for Individuals with Learning Differences
Dear Friends and Partners,
At Hardin-Simmons University, we believe in the power of evolution to strengthen mission and expand impact. Today, we’re excited to share how the Houston-Lantrip Center for Literacy and Learning is taking its next significant step forward.
Since opening in 2019, the Houston-Lantrip Center has served Big Country families while honoring Mae Lantrip’s vision of opening doors for individuals uniquely gifted in how they learn. Like many programs nationwide, we’ve faced workforce challenges that have led us to pause and think strategically about meeting the needs of our students and region.
Looking ahead with hope and intentionality, we’re proud to share that the impactful work of the Houston-Lantrip Center is evolving into new integrated academic and community opportunities. While the form of our work is changing, the heart of our mission remains—to be a light of compassion, learning, and Christ-centered service.
We’re expanding our clinical mental health counseling, communication sciences and disorders, and speech-language pathology programs. The facility transition is expected to be complete by fall 2025, resulting in an improved therapy training space and expanded services for the community.
Families can expect continued services through:
- Clinical services provided through our academic programs’ community therapy components
- Houston-Lantrip endowment resources supporting autism and dyslexia conferences, training, and partnerships
- Community Speech Camp each summer for children with learning differences
- Community partnerships connecting families to appropriate care
Our enhanced facility will support expanded outreach:
- SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program (Fall 2025): Free, professional-level therapy for individuals with Parkinson’s and neurological disorders, led by two certified HSU faculty
- Rural School Mental Health Services: A federal grant partnership with Region 14 bringing telehealth counseling to underserved West Texas schools
- Expanded therapy services through improved training facilities serving more individuals
- Continued aphasia services and support programs
All families who previously utilized the facility have been personally notified, and we’ve helped ensure continuity of care by connecting them to new therapy providers.
This transition honors Mae Lantrip’s vision by creating sustainable, long-term support for individuals with learning differences while equipping more professionals to serve our region.
We’re deeply grateful for your continued support. We invite you to stay connected as these programs grow. Your partnership helps ensure that individuals with learning differences receive the compassionate, Christ-centered care they deserve.
