BSM offers new students opportunities to serve at the Howdy Party

Missions work and travel are just a few advantages of being a member of BSM

Baptist Students Ministries (BSM) provided new students a chance to learn about ways to serve the community at the Howdy Party this week. The purpose of this fair was to introduce information about the trips, missions and new opportunities for those who want to join. Volunteers served drinks, ice cream and talked about all the activities they have throughout the year.

There is a lot going on in BSM. If you are a freshman and want to get involved with them, your first step is to join FreshCo. Being a member of FreshCo you are going to participate in many campus events, help to organize them, and it is a good way to get to know more people. “The friends that I made there are still my friends. It is a great opportunity to meet new people!” said Sydney, one of the volunteers.

BSM offers opportunities to serve, and at the same time, allows students to travel to new places. There are opportunities to travel for spring break and fall break. The spring break trip last year consisted of a visit to New York City where the students helped children with their homework, served for a church, and they even led Bible studies. “We were divided by groups: some went to visit Broadway, and some went to another show. This year we do not know where we are going yet” said one student who went on the trip.

For fall break, they offer a mission trip to assist people in need. One of the members of BSM told us that she got to travel to help with a hurricane disaster team and cleaned up houses and streets. “It was my favorite event that year, and I made the best friends. Plus, it sums up 10 chapel credits if you go, so it is awesome!”

Another activity that should not be missed is Go Now Missions, a program where every Texas student can go to share the gospel around the world and experience different ways to serve the community through missions. You can go as many times as you want and whenever you want. “I went one week to Moldova, in Europe. I really enjoyed it because it was a whole different culture,” says Bailey, one of the students who went last year.

Another opportunity specifically for female BSM members is Woven Woman which takes place on Monday nights from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. For those interested, contact the BSM office, there is going to be a kickoff party next Monday at 6:30pm.

Overall, there are many ways to get involved with BSM. Terri Prestidge, who organized the fair, said that “FreshCo plans events on campus, so it is a good way to know people and find out what you enjoy. Then when you get to be one of the Leadership Team you can do mission trips, welcome missions, and missions on campus.”

For more information you can attend the FreshCo information meeting on Tuesday, September 4th at 4:00pm or click here: https://www.hsutx.edu/student-life/spiritual-life/baptist-student-ministries/bsm-student-volunteer-registration/
