Dr. M. Daniel Carroll Rodas to Address Migration and the Bible at Maston Lectures

This year’s T.B. Maston Lectures in Christian Ethics will feature M. Daniel Carroll R. (Rodas), PhD. His lectures addressing “Migration and the Bible” will be held March 5-6 in Logsdon Chapel.

Dr. Carroll is the son of a Guatemalan mother and an American father, who himself was the son of Irish immigrants. Danny was raised bilingual and bicultural in Houston, Texas, and he spent many summers of his youth in Guatemala. Before returning to the U.S. in the summer of 1996, he was an Old Testament professor for 13 years at an interdenominational seminary in Guatemala City. He continues as adjunct professor there. His primary research interests are in the prophetic literature and Old Testament social ethics.

Dr. Carroll has been involved in issues related to Hispanic immigration for many years and attends a Hispanic church. The fact that he is comfortable in both Hispanic and Anglo cultures helps Danny bring an irenic spirit and lots of personal experience to the immigration discussion.

Dr. Carroll earned a PhD from the University of Sheffield, England, a ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a BA from Rice University. He is Blanchard Professor of Old Testament in the Graduate School of Wheaton College. Before assuming his position at Wheaton College he was Distinguished Professor of Old Testament at Denver Seminary, where he founded a Spanish-language training program.

During the lectures, the Young Maston Scholar Award will be presented to two students from each Baptist university in Texas. The 2018 Maston Scholars are Mardochee Estinvil and Dominick Lopez from the Baptist University of the Americas, Jacob Ables and Jordan Whicker from Dallas Baptist University, James Ash and Conner Guthrie from East Texas Baptist University, Madison Boboltz and Carlo Serna from Hardin-Simmons University, Cadence Tripp and Beth Zimmerman from Houston Baptist University, Cecily McIlwain and Jordan Pitman from Howard Payne University, Ashley Gregorie and Marek Reyes from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and Eric Dexter II and Anita Salazar from Wayland Baptist University.

The T. B. Maston Lectures in Christian Ethics are an annual lecture series presented by Logsdon Seminary and The Logsdon School of Theology of Hardin-Simmons University. These lectures seek to honor the legacy of Dr. T. B. Maston, longtime Professor of Christian Ethics and pioneering Baptist ethicist. Maston was known for his writing and teaching in the areas of biblical ethics, race relations, family life, the Christian and vocation, church and state, and character formation.
