Preview of the upcoming 2018-2019 HSU Music Events

One thing you can count on at Hardin-Simmons is that you will always be entertained. The College of Fine Arts always has wonderful events going on to bring the arts to campus. So far this season we have seen “Anything Goes” the musical, HSU Sing, the Band Concert, the guest performer Ken Medema, and the performance of the Christian band Gray Havens. But there is more to come, here’s just a taste of the upcoming events. On November 2, HSU welcomes Oktubafest. Hardin-Simmons Jazz Band will present on November 29, and there will be a Choral Showcase in December 3. For the Christmas season, the HSU Band will perform a Christmas Concert. Moving on to spring season, on February 19 cellist Christopher Adkins will perform a free concert open to public. During this term, HSU students will also present “Little Women” musical on February 20-23 and “The Merry Widow Opera” on March 28-30.

Fall 2018 season:

Oktubafest, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Woodward Dellis Recital Hall

HSU welcomes the 11th edition of this festival that celebrates the tuba and euphonium by universities across the world. With Dr. Jeffrey Cottrell as featuring and director, students will perform a variety of musical styles that will include German Polka music and jazz.

Dr. Cottrell will perform two pieces on solo tuba, and the event will also present the debut of the Civic Tuba/ Euphonium Ensemble made up of musicians from three different universities. Lastly, the HSU Jazz Ensemble will perform two compositions of Dr. Cottrell.

There will be a reception on the 3rd floor of Caldwell Hall following the concert featuring German treats and root beer.

HEB Feast of Sharing, November 6 at 2:10 p.m. in Will Rogers Coliseum (in Ft. Worth)

HEB food stores have been hosting a free feast for the community during Thanksgiving season. For the past few years, they have been inviting and sponsoring the Cowboy Band from HSU to travel to Fort Worth to perform at the parade they have there at the Will Rogers Coliseum. The HSU students will be traveling over to perform as a part of this event.

At this event, food will be provided for free for everyone who comes, and many employees and students volunteer to serve the food.

“Feast of Sharing is the culmination of a year‑round commitment H‑E‑B makes to fighting hunger. In addition to a holiday meal you can enjoy music, arts and crafts, and kids activities,” said Billy Harden, involved in the organization of this event.

Jazz Ensemble Concert, November 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Behrens Van Ellis Room Stage

The members of the Jazz Ensemble will bring the Christmas spirit to HSU with this Christmas inspired Jazz Concert.

Choral Showcase, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Woodward Recital Auditorium

For this occasion, the Choral Group, UpBeat and the Concert Choir will join to bring a night full of singing.

To cherish the holiday season, the members of the HSU Band will have a concert inspired on the Christmas spirit and joy.

Spring 2019:

Cellist Christopher Adkins in Concert, February 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Woodward Recital Auditorium

Mr. Christopher Adkins, a cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will conduct a master class for former students from HSU, ACU, and Abilene ISD string students at 5 p.m. to perfect their technique and learn pro-tips for their instruments. Later, at 7:30 he will perform free and open to the public.

Little Women Musical, February 20-23 at 7:30 p.m. and February 23, 24 at 2:00 p.m. in Van Ellis Theatre

The Theatre Department brings the first musical of the spring season, on this occasion based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel “Little Women.” Directed by Dr. Chris Hollingsworth, the musical follows the adventures of the sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March. A night filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit guaranteed.

The Merry Widow Opera, March 28-30 at 7:30 p.m. in Van Ellis Theatre

Hanna Glawari needs to marry a man so that she can keep her fortune and Count Danilo seems to be the ideal candidate. But in order to avoid her thinking that he is only attracted to the rich widow’s money, Danilo feigns indifference, until the unfolding of certain misunderstandings leads him to declare his love. An opera by Franz Lehár and directed by Dr. Chris Hollingsworth.
