May Graduation Spotlight: Gavin Payne

Gavin Payne, a New Braunfels, Texas, native, faced a difficult decision coming out of high school. He asked himself, “Do I pursue my childhood dream of playing college football or forgo that experience and attend a larger university?”
After talking with his mom and asking God for direction, he decided to give that dream a chance and enrolled at Hardin-Simmons University. That decision would prepare him for life after college more than he ever thought possible.
During his time at HSU, Gavin served as president of the Delta Mu Delta business fraternity, interned at Big Country Title, and played tight end for the HSU football team from 2021 to 2023.
When asked about his most cherished memory at HSU, he reminisced about meeting his now-fiancée.
“HSU has offered many amazing things that I will carry with me wherever I go, but the best of these is the most beautiful and caring woman I have ever encountered. I love you, Emma Lou!” Gavin said.
As a finance major in HSU’s Kelley College of Business, Gavin was introduced to mentors who taught him many life lessons and helped him find his passion. He credits Dr. Doug McIntyre with playing a pivotal role in his journey.
“Dr. Doug McIntyre has been a big influence on my life. He has never shied away from answering a question or welcoming a conversation. It was his guidance and support that led me to find my passion, and for that I will always be grateful,” Gavin said.
Following graduation, Gavin will spend the summer interning with the Investment Brokerage Division at Marcus & Millichap in Houston. In the fall, he plans to begin the Master of Real Estate program at Texas A&M University.
He offered the following advice to incoming freshmen:
“The output you receive from a situation will never be less than what you put into a situation. When shown a scenario in which there are a lot of problems, everyone can point these out instantly. However, there are very few who are willing to take the time, energy, and care to make things better.”
Congratulations, Gavin!
