May Graduation Spotlight: Cindy Florez

As graduation season approaches, we recognize some students who have excelled in many ways during their time here at Hardin-Simmons University.

Cindy Arelie Florez will be graduating from Hardin-Simmons University this May with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Originally from La Habra, California, she never imagined that a Google search would lead her to our campus.

“While still living in California, I decided to research social work programs around the country, and Hardin-Simmons’ social work program appeared on my computer screen,” she shared.

After reaching out for more information, Cindy received a personal response from the social work program director at the time, Mrs. Milliorn. After having all the necessary conversations, she became convinced that HSU was where she belonged.

“I desired to learn from educators who shared the same desire to love and help others in their community,” Cindy explained.

Since beginning her college journey at HSU in fall 2022, Cindy has experienced both personal and academic growth with help from her mentors—Mrs. Milliorn, Dr. Cantrell, and Mrs. Smith.

“I have endured many hardships as a student, wife, and mother, but God’s grace is evident in my professors,” she shared. “I have accomplished more than I ever imagined, and I owe it to God for placing me under the guidance of kind, caring, and compassionate educators.”

Cindy loves the safe, family-like atmosphere that Hardin-Simmons offers. While earning her bachelor’s degree, she has met many incredible individuals whom she now considers family. She also enjoys the beautiful scenery and calm environment of the campus, which elevated her college experience.

Faith has remained an integral part of Cindy’s life throughout these years.

“Psalm 34:18 reminds me that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,” she shared. “We are held by God’s righteous hand, and I am living proof that with God, all things are possible!”

Her time at HSU has been marked by leadership roles and recognition for academic excellence. Cindy currently serves as the 2024–25 Social Work Club president and Sigma Beta vice president. She has been awarded the J.L. Cole Endowed Social Work Scholarship and the Everette E. and Orabeth K. Woods Endowed Social Work Scholarship.

“Words cannot express the gratitude I hold in my heart toward those who have supported me in recognizing my passion to serve others,” she said.

Looking ahead, Cindy plans to continue her educational journey at Stephen F. Austin State University, where she hopes to earn a master’s degree in social work.

Her advice to college students: “Lay all your worries and troubles at the feet of Jesus and let Him guide your steps. You do not have to worry about anything because the victory is already won!”

Congratulations to Cindy on crossing this milestone!
