The Ira M. Taylor Memorial Gallery is honored to host an exhibition of works by renowned artist Carol H. Fairlie. Fairlie has been showing her pieces since 1974 when she hosted her first one-person show. She is a nationally-known artist and is a holder of Signature status in the Watercolor Honor Society and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. She also holds Elite Signature status in the Watercolor Art Society of Houston. Fairlie has served on the Board of Directors for both the National Watercolor Society and the Texas Association of Schools of Art. Fairlie’s current show, entitled “Concept of the Non-Narrative,” will run through October.

The public is invited to attend two gallery receptions. The first will take place on Saturday, October 13, 2018, from 5:00-6:30pm at Hardin-Simmons University for Alumni during Homecoming. The second will take place on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, from 5:00-6:30pm. The artist will be present to speak on her works during the second reception.

“Viewers have been bowled over by this show so far, students and adults alike!  They are responding to the color, skill in rendering (realism), fanciful settings and an imaginative cast of characters,” says Linda Fawcett, Professor of Art. Viewers of the show can expect to see realistic life-size portraits, colorful watercolor pieces, and works that transport the viewer to international locations and hotel lobbies. “Fairlie has international connections, and the settings of much of their (Fairlie and her husband’s) travels over the years show up in the paintings. Very inclusive,” Fawcett continues.

On the afternoon of October 30, before the second reception, Fairlie will be “conducting a workshop on ways to map out (begin) believable anatomy and proportions for the human figure, based on her intense, traditional training at the Pennsylvania Academy.” Fairlie explains that “studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy was all about the figure, and portraiture was something we were trained to do in great depth.”

Fairlie earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University, a Master’s of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas, and a certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 2019, Fairlie looks forward to becoming the ambassador for the National Portrait Society for both the New Mexico and the West Texas regions.
