5 Must-Take Steps to Find Your Future Roommate

April 15, 2025 Malachi Daniels, Student Writer

Finding the right person to share a room with can be a stressful experience, but don’t worry!

These steps will both ease your anxiety and set you up for success at Hardin-Simmons University.

Here are the five steps to finding your ideal roommate!

  1. Evaluate Your Wants and Needs

Start by asking yourself some key questions:

  • Am I messy or neat?
  • Do I go to bed early, or am I a night owl?
  • Am I looking for a best friend or just someone respectful to share a space with?

Understanding your own preferences will make it easier to find what kind of roommate will be the best fit. This self-awareness will help you narrow down your options when it’s time to meet potential matches.

  1. Use HSU’s Freshman Page to Make Connections

Hardin-Simmons offers a great way to connect with fellow incoming students via Instagram at @hsutx29_.

This page allows you to introduce yourself, find people who are looking for roommates, and chat with future HSU students. It’s an easy and casual way to start making connections before move-in day!

  1. Interview Potential Matches

Once you’ve connected with someone who seems like a good fit, take the time to really get to know them. Ask about their habits, lifestyle, and expectations.

Don’t be afraid to discuss boundaries and preferences upfront; it will help reduce future misunderstandings and conflicts. Think of this step as a friendly job interview for your shared space!

  1. Use ResLife Central

Once you and your future roommate have agreed to live together, head over to ResLife Central, located in the Self-Service Center on your student portal.

Here, you can officially request to room together and see where you’ll be placed in the dorms. For more details on the housing process, visit HSU’s Housing Information Page.

  1. Remember, No One is Perfect!

Even the best roommates occasionally clash; it’s just part of living with someone new.

The keys to a successful roommate relationship are respect, communication, and compromise.

Keep an open mind, be willing to grow, and remember you’re both figuring this out together. Roommate life isn’t always easy, but with these steps, you’ll be well on your way to a positive and memorable first-year experience at HSU!
