Spring School of Music Performances Announced

From opera to choir to band, there are many opportunities to hear music at HSU. As the end of the semester approaches, the School of Music will showcase their talent with several performances.

The HSU trombone ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Cottrell, will perform April 10 at 7:30 in the Woodward-Dellis recital hall. They will play music in a variety of styles, such as jazz, rock, and classical. This concert will feature a solo performance by Dr. Cottrell and the premiere of the trombone ensemble arrangement of Shofukan by the Grammy award-winning jazz group Sharkey Puppy.

Students will perform the opera “The Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart April 12-14 at 7:30 p.m. in Van Ellis Theatre. According to Director Dr. Chris Hollingsworth, Mozart’s comic masterpiece delivers an ageless message of love and forgiveness.

The HSU Choral Showcase featuring the Concert Choir, Chorale, and UpBeat, will perform on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Woodward-Dellis Recital Hall. “People should come to hear an amazing diversity of music,” said Concert Choir director, Dr. Clell Wright. “From vocal pop arrangements to Renaissance choral music. From Broadway show tunes to compositions by living HSU composers. It will be a wonderful concert.” The HSU Chorale will also perform a spiritual by Moses Hogan called “Every Time I feel the Spirit,” a West Side Story medley, and a gospel, “I Shall Wear a Crown.”

On April 29, the Civic Orchestra of Abilene, including several HSU students and professors, will perform their concert “Sacred Space. The performance will feature HSU professor of voice, Dr. Lynette Chambers in the song “Angels in the Architecture” by Frank Ticheli.

The HSU Jazz Ensemble will perform April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Behrens Auditorium under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Cottrell. The concert will feature cool, modern jazz of recent years by current jazz artists.

The HSU Concert Band, directed by Dr. Wayne Dorothy, will hold their spring concert on May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Behrens Auditorium. They will perform “A La Machaut” by Andrew Boss, “Cowboy Rhapsody,” by Morton Gould, and “Sweet of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett.
