For the summer break of 2017, Hardin- Simmons Athletics will be offering sports summer camps for interested participants in the Abilene and surrounding communities. The available camps will be for students wanting to participate in football, soccer, girls’ basketball, tennis, and volleyball. Through these summer camps, students will be able to strengthen their skills and confidence in their selected field of activity.

Football

There will be three football summer programs available for students: the Cowboy Corral Skills Camp for grades 10-12 on May 26, a Youth Football Camp on May 30-June1 for grade K-6, and a HSU Football JH Camp for grades 7-9 on May 30-June 1.

At the Cowboy Corral Skills Camp, players will be coached by the Hardin-Simmons football coaches and will get recruiting experiences through a campus tour and position specific skills training and competitions.
Players attending the Youth and Junior High Camps will learn and work on basic football fundamental skills, such as kicking, passing, and tackling. The camp will contain no physical contact between players and will focus primarily on maintaining a positive attitude among the players during the training.

Basketball

The girls’ basketball program at HSU will be hosting four summer camp opportunities. The day camp will be for grades K-6 from June 12-15. The overnight camp on June 18-21 for grades 6-12. The next overnight camp will be open June 21-24 for grades 3-8. There will also be a team camp for all high school basketball teams from July 20-22.

At each camp, the participants will be coached by the HSU staff, players, and alumni of the Cowgirl Basketball team. The students will work on fundamental skills and defensive skills, as well participate in competitions, tournaments, and nightly team games. Along with working on their basketball abilities, the players will get insight on what it takes to be a good player and teammate.

“The campers will have an enjoyable time learning the fundamentals of basketball as well as what it takes to be a successful teammate,” said HSU Cowgirl Basketball Coach, Melanie Chonko.

Volleyball

The Volleyball Program of Hardin-Simmons is offering two overnight camps on June 29-July 1 for grades 7-8 and July 6-8 for grades 9-12, and a day camp on July 3-5 for grades 4-6.

At all three camps, players will be trained on how to learn and strengthen fundamental volleyball skills. The players will work on their personal skills, as well as what is takes to be a good teammate through group activities.

Soccer

The HSU Soccer Program will offer three soccer camps: a day camp for ages 5-13 on June 5-8, an overnight camp for ages 8-18 on July 5-8, and a college prep camp for high school juniors and seniors on July 28-30.

The day camp is a chance for new or beginner level players to experience the skills of soccer in a fun learning environment. The overnight camp is encouraged for more advanced soccer players, and will include more complex and comprehensive soccer skills. The final camp, the college prep camp, is for high school players who are interested in playing for the HSU soccer team at the collegiate level.

Through each of the camps, the theme of “Building Character through Soccer” will be presented, and the participants will be instructed on the skills of the game along with character qualities needed to be a good soccer player both on and off the field.

Tennis

There will be two summer session available for interested tennis players at HSU for grades 7-12. The first program will be on June 18-22, and the second on June 25-29. Participants will be educated on basic tennis skills, as well as learn advanced techniques when players are ready in a fun, educational environment.

The Hardin-Simmons Athletic Department hopes to provide each participant with the opportunity to learn and strengthen their athletic skills through the summer camps this year.
