Hardin-Simmons University is again recognizing former students, employees and staff who have distinguished records of achievement and have proven themselves as men and women of good character. The Hall of Leaders was created in 2001, and since that time has recognized almost 100 honorees. This year’s honorees are:

· Bruce Evans: a 1978 graduate is Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer of American Electric Power (AEP). Bruce and his wife Kim are active members of their church and have served on many local civic boards. He resides in Columbus, Ohio

· Elta Joyce McAfee: a 1957 graduate is a generous member of the San Angelo community, she is also a steadfast supporter of education and the arts. Her philanthropic work in the Concho Valley is without parallel, and she has been a leader in many arts projects; including the creation of Ballet San Angelo, restoring the San Angelo City Auditorium (which is now named in her honor) and her work with the “Christians United for Israel” concert.

· Dr. Elwin L. Skiles: was President of Hardin-Simmons University from 1966-1977. An ordained Baptist minister, he served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Abilene prior to becoming President of HSU for 13 years. Dr. Skiles passed away in 2002.

· Ivan I. Smith, Jr.: a 1968 graduate is former president and CEO of Ivan Smith Furniture. During his tenure as president, the company expanded from one store to more than 40 stores throughout East Texas, Southern Arkansas, North and Central Louisiana. The Smith family are proud philanthropists in Northwest Louisiana sponsoring programs that feed the hungry, provide meals for first responders, assist veterans, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

These inductees were honored in a reception today at Hardin-Simmons University.
