Scholarship Recipient: Alex Govea
Worship Leadership | Argyle, TX
“All of this has helped my wife and me prepare for our upcoming transition.”
Finances are a concern for a lot of students and families. Tell us about the impact the scholarship has had on you.
I am a first-generation college student, and this is mainly because with my family’s income, there was no way we could afford to send anyone to college. Not only I, but my family is so thankful for the kindness of our donors.
How has HSU impacted you?
I am simply a new person than I was as an incoming freshman. HSU has shaped me as a worship leader, but also as a leader, husband, and friend.
How has your degree program helped prepare you for your future career calling?
The classes for the Worship Leadership program set you up to have all the knowledge and know-how, both technical and theological, to lead a worship team if ever you were in charge of a church plant or wanting to integrate yourself in an established church family. It takes your love for music and combines it with your devotion to guiding hearts in a life of worship.
Tell us about the impact the scholarship has had on you.
The scholarships I’ve received have blessed me with an education I could never have gotten on my own. The Lord blessed me through the kindness and love of my donors, and I am nothing but grateful. It lets me sleep at night and not worry about what debt I or my family could have been in had we done this alone.
Tell us about your journey to HSU.
College was never in the picture. I wanted to do missions overseas, not for the Lord’s will, but for mine. After COVID, it was clear the Lord was calling me elsewhere. Through the incredible admissions office, I was able to tour HSU, and I fell in love with the campus and the new Worship Leadership program. I knew the Lord was doing something at HSU and I wanted to be a part of it.
What has been your greatest achievement thus far?
Because of the grace of God, I will be the first full 4-year Worship Leadership major. Other than that, I was honored to accept University Homecoming King. Lastly, I got to give a speech at last year’s Scholarship Luncheon, where I was able to thank my donors and shed light on some of the life-changing advice and lessons I’ve witnessed at HSU through its leaders.
What HSU organizations have you been involved with?
I have been involved in Kappa Phi Omega, Spiritual Life, Residence Life, choir, and HGT (Hunters, Gatherers & Travelers), and 2 years as an HSU Instagram Ambassador.
What is next for you?
My wife and I are moving to Ft. Smith, Arkansas where I will be a full-time Worship Intern for Life Church Ft. Smith!
What is your favorite Cowboy tradition?
Stampede, Stampede, Stampede. I personally love the Alumni Ice Cream Social.
What is your favorite study spot on campus?
The library has been my go-to spot because Gilbert’s is there when I need a pick-me-up!
