Dr. Marsha Rutland graduated from University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy (1979), Master of Education from Hardin-Simmons University (2002) and a ScD in Physical Therapy with emphasis in Orthopedics from Texas Tech University Health Science Center (2008). She also earned her certification as an orthopedic manual therapist (COMT) for extremities through IAOM. Dr. Rutland held an APTA Certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) from 2003-2023. She is a certified Dry Needler (C-DN) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). She has been teaching at HSU DPT program for 25 years with present teaching responsibilities in Clinical Anatomy I and II, Diagnostic Imaging, and Healthcare Management. Dr. Rutland is the program director and professor of the Gould Anatomy Certification Program at HSU since its inception in 2020. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA), American Academy of Clinical Anatomists (AACA) and American Association of Anatomists (AAA). Dr. Rutland’s research interests’ center around anatomy, orthopedic assessment and treatment issues. She presents research regularly at APTA-CSM, TPTA, AACA, AAA, annual conferences. Dr. Rutland was a recipient of the Texas Tech University Health Science Center Distinguished Alumni (2022), APTA Dorothy Baethke-Eleanor J. Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching (2022); HSU Faculty Member of the Year (2021); Recipient of the Academy of Advanced Item Writers (2019); HSU Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2014); and the TPTA William R. Gould Memorial Outstanding Physical Therapy Faculty Member Award (2011). Dr. Rutland has 46 years of experience as a clinical practitioner in a variety of settings, including outpatient orthopedic/ neurologic rehab, home health and acute rehab experience. She was a clinical instructor for 20 years prior to full time teaching and was recognized as an outstanding clinical instructor by the Texas Consortium for Physical Therapy Clinical Education (2002).
