Tips for the Incoming International Freshman

August 4, 2025 Charis Ochu, Student Writer

Moving thousands of miles away from home is never easy. You’re leaving behind your family, friends, and the culture you know. I’m writing this as a current international student at Hardin-Simmons University, hoping you’ll find it helpful and that it will ease your transition.

The Office of Global Engagement: This office should be your first stop for support as you adjust to life at Hardin-Simmons University and ensure your international student status remains in good standing. If you have questions, they can either assist you directly or connect you with someone who can help.

International Student Orientation: Upon arrival, you will be expected to go through a one- to two-day orientation session where you will be given information and tips to help you as you go through the upcoming school year. There will be so much to cover, and it is almost impossible to remember all the information. To help, the Office of Global Engagement provides you with binders containing all the information that will be discussed during orientation. Keep this binder safe and make reference to it when the need arises. Despite the provision of these binders, pay attention during orientation and learn as much as possible.

Stampede: Stampede is a weeklong, fun orientation provided for new students to get connected with their peers and upperclassmen and become acquainted with the campus before classes begin. Take advantage of this by attending as many events as you can and interacting with your classmates. Keep an open mind and have fun!

Class Schedule: The Office of Global Engagement, in collaboration with the admission counselors, provides a general tour to give you an idea of locations on campus. However, it is helpful to explore the campus on your own before classes begin, using your schedule to find each classroom. To view your schedule, log into your HSU Self-Service account, click on “Student Planning,” then “Plan and Schedule.” Writing your schedule down on paper can make it easier to carry with you.

Applying for on-campus jobs: Having an on-campus job can help cover some personal expenses. To find a list of available jobs, click here. Creating a résumé early will help you apply as soon as positions become available. For assistance with your résumé, visit the HSU Career Services page and schedule an appointment with the current Guided Pathways Career Advisor.

ACE Tutoring: As the semester progresses, if you find yourself struggling with a particular course, seeking quick help from the ACE tutors will be helpful. The longer you wait, the more material you’ll have to learn—because it is hard to move forward without understanding the basics. Seeking help from the ACE tutors is a good strategy alongside meeting directly with your professors.

Financial Aid / Scholarship Applications: Every spring semester, students can apply for scholarships through Scholarship Universe. I understand how challenging funding your college education can be, especially since loans are not really an option. That’s why I cannot overemphasize the importance of applying early for these scholarships.
