Spring Graduation Spotlight: Jailyn Woods McGarthy

May 15, 2023 Charis Ochu

Jailyn Woods-McGarthy, fondly known as Jai, graduated with a degree in strategic communications with a minor in marketing. Originally from Hutchin, Texas, Jai arrived at HSU in August 2019. She made this decision because of the faith values that the school was founded upon. “I loved the welcome and home feeling that I felt as soon as I walked onto campus,” she shared.

Jailyn was deeply involved in several activities on campus, including Proven and HsCrU dance team. She also worked at the Student Government Association (SGA) and as an Assistant to the Project Coordinator in University Marketing. She was crowned as the University Queen of the 2022-2023 school year.

Jai loves the family she got once she became a Cowboy. “Seeing familiar faces is very comforting. I love the positive vibes and great energy on this campus,” she said.

In her free time, she enjoys shopping, having conversations, dancing, taking naps, listening to music, and making people laugh.

Jailyn is thankful to Dr. Steve Stogsdill, President Eric Bruntmyer, and Dr. Stacey Martin for their mentorship and guidance throughout her college journey.

Her favorite Bible verse is Psalms 46:5, which says, “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”

Her advice to HSU students is, “do not procrastinate. Be able to balance your social life and schoolwork. Make friends and prioritize yourself. It is okay to take a self-care day.”

Jai will cherish all the memories she has made in college forever.

Congratulations Jailyn!
