Spring Graduation Spotlight: Givan Rhodes

Givan Rhodes, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, arrived at Hardin-Simmons University after graduating from high school in 2019. He is a biology major with a minor in psychology. He decided to join the HSU family because of the freedom he would have to express his love for God on campus.

Givan received the award for Cowboy of the Year.
During his time at HSU, Givan remained very involved on campus, including being a part of the HSU football team and serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) for three years. He also worked for two years at the Boys and Girls Club. In an entrepreneurial spirit, Rhodes opened his own pressure-washing company and also provided affordable haircuts to residents on campus. Furthermore, Givan volunteered at Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, and the Drop-In Center.
As a result of his exceptional performance, Givan received the award for RA of the Year and Cowboy of the Year in his first and final year as an RA, respectively.
Givan loves West Texas sunrises and sunsets that light up the campus dew. He also loves the determination of HSU students, faculty, and staff to achieve greatness.
In his free time, he enjoys watching movies, playing basketball, bowling, getting drinks with his friends at Sonic, and bargain shopping.
Rhodes thanks his mentor Dr. Kevin Kelley for sharing his wisdom with him.
His favorite Bible verse is, “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.” Matthew 7:1-2.
Givan’s advice to students at HSU is, “If you want change, become love. Remember why you are going through this path in life, and if you ever question a decision, the answer is no.”
