May Graduation Spotlight: Tristin Laughlin

April 28, 2025 Charis Ochu, Student Writer

As graduation season approaches, we recognize some students who have excelled in many ways during their time here at Hardin-Simmons University.

Tristin Russell Laughlin joined the HSU family in the fall of 2021 to major in biology with minors in biochemistry and honors studies. HSU offered him the perfect balance between academics and athletics, allowing him to continue his passion for baseball while preparing for a career in veterinary medicine.

During his time at HSU, he has been involved in multiple organizations, including the HSU baseball team, Pre-Health Club, and the Holland School of Science and Mathematics Research Society, where he served as president.

Throughout his academic journey, Tristin earned the Evans Scholarship, Kiker Scholarship, and the UIL Texas Football Scholarship. He recognizes the crucial role his professors played in his success, especially Dr. Copeland, Dr. Ingle, Dr. Stevens, and Dr. Younce, whose mentorship helped shape his academic path.

One of Tristin’s most cherished HSU traditions is the pancake study break held prior to finals week.

“It was always a fun break from studying that included food, which is always a big bonus for me,” Tristin shared.

Outside of academics, Tristin enjoys hunting, fishing, and running with his dog. His hobbies provide efficient ways to relax after a busy day.

Tristin remains constantly inspired by this Bible verse: “He who gains wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.” — Proverbs 19:8

After graduation, Tristin will attend the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo, Texas, where he hopes to specialize in equine or ruminant medicine. His time at HSU confirmed his passion for veterinary medicine, thanks to professors and advisors who guided and encouraged him along the way.

His advice to college students is: “Make the most of your time in college. At HSU, there are many opportunities within the campus that will help you succeed as a student and in the future as a professional. Be open to seeking these opportunities whenever you can.”

Congratulations to Tristin on this great achievement!
