Inside the Student Government Association

At Hardin-Simmons University, many students don’t realize just how much campus life is shaped by the Student Government Association.

From managing student organization funds to advocating for change around campus, the SGA plays a vital role in making the student experience vibrant, fair, and engaging. But what exactly goes on behind the scenes?

What is SGA?

The Student Government Association serves as the official voice of the student body. Its mission is to advocate for student needs, support campus organizations, and foster an inclusive and dynamic campus culture.

SGA is made up of elected student leaders who work year-round to ensure that student concerns are heard and addressed.

“We are the bridge between the student body and administration, carrying the voice of students into places where real change happens,” said Executive Chaplain Halle Bruntmyer. “It’s a calling to serve with humility, to listen with compassion, and to lead in a way that reflects Christ’s heart for every voice.”

Decision-making: The process behind the power

When it comes to making decisions, SGA operates much like any professional governing body. Senators, committees, or students themselves bring issues forward.

After open discussion and debate, the executive body votes on proposals, which can range from changes in campus policies to new initiatives or student services.

Recent proposals have suggested replacing the aging library equipment, improving lighting around campus walkways, and collaborating with the cafeteria team to extend weekly dining hours.

Events and initiatives: Building the HSU community

If you’ve ever attended a Town Hall meeting, CASL Leadership Conference, or Serve Like Simmons, you’ve seen SGA in action. These events foster community, bring students together and provide everyone with an opportunity to connect across the Forty Acres.

“We want students to know we’re listening,” said Malachi Daniels, SGA’s executive treasurer. “Every event we plan has one goal: to make HSU feel more like home.”

Advocates for the student body

SGA is more than event planning — it is a powerful advocacy group. When students face challenges or want to see change, SGA members are the ones who take those issues to the administration.

One recent example was when students voiced concern about limited access to counseling services.

SGA met with university leadership to discuss expanding hours and improving visibility. The result? A campus-wide mental health awareness campaign and an increase in student wellness resources.

How to get involved

Getting involved is easier than many students think. Elections are held every fall for incoming freshmen and spring for upperclassmen.

Even if you are not ready to run, students are welcome to attend meetings, join committees, and share ideas with their representatives.

“Don’t wait to be invited — step in,” encouraged Daniels. “Student voices are powerful, and the more involved you are, the more you’ll see HSU become what you want it to be.”

Why SGA matters

The Student Government Association is not just a club — it is the voice for all Cowboys and Cowgirls. It is where change begins, where voices are amplified, and where leadership is built.

So next time you attend an event, see a new campus policy, or have an idea to improve HSU, remember: the Student Government Association is listening. And it is here to serve you.
