(ABILENE, Texas)—Each year, hopeful students from around the state apply for a chance to join the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP), which assists qualified Texas students gain admission into one of 11 Texas medical schools. Program admission is highly competitive, and three of Hardin-Simmons University’s class of 2020 made the cut. HSU seniors Jesper Jiang, Morgan McAdams, and Abhi Rashiwala will begin medical school in the fall thanks in part to the support of JAMP.

The Texas Legislature started JAMP in 2003 as a way to support and encourage economically disadvantaged students in Texas with goals of entering the medical profession. The program consists of a unique partnership between 68 four-year undergraduate institutions and 11 Texas medical schools. Those accepted into the program receive guaranteed graduate interviews with each member institution, guaranteed acceptance into one of the member programs, access to support and resources, as well as financial and academic support leading up to and during their medical education.

JAMP’s admission process begins each May and concludes the following October. Eligible applicants must complete a series of essays and informational paperwork before the application deadline.

Approximately 100 students are accepted each year, which equals one to two students per participating undergraduate program. To have three JAMP students in one class representing the same university is exciting and rare.

HSU senior Jesper Jiang will attend the Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine this fall through JAMP.

“Coming from a family where no one has gone to college, much less medical school, and also being economically disadvantaged, JAMP has been a huge blessing in providing support and guidance on my journey to become a physician,” says Jiang. “Because of JAMP, I now can eagerly anticipate starting a brand-new chapter of my life this fall as a first-year medical student in the Class of 2024 at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine, and become one step closer to my goal of becoming a pediatrician. I could not be more grateful and blessed to be a part of JAMP.”

Congratulations to HSU’s JAMP members on their impending graduation!
