HSU Introduces Meridian Fellows Program

HSU is excited to announce the Meridian Fellows Program, a new cohort which will begin in Fall 2019. The purpose of the program is to create a supportive academic community that fosters a student’s love for learning. Inspired by one of HSU’s founders, Rev. James B. Simmons, the program will be built around two central questions: “What is the greatest thought that has ever occupied your mind?” and “What is your duty towards fulfilling it?”

Dr. Travis Frampton

The program will be directed by Dr. Travis Frampton, vice president for university mission and strategic vision. He hopes that the fellows will become better citizens; curious, imaginative critical thinkers; empathetic listeners; and positive voices for the benefit of others.

“The Meridian Fellows Program will create space for students to share their greatest thoughts with other students and learn how to make those thoughts a reality through curricular and co-curricular experiences,” said Frampton.

Fellows will study alongside peers, in a cohort formed intentionally around common values and a shared vision. Fellows will be taught by dedicated and caring faculty who believe that education, at its best, is transformational and inspirational.

“I hope this program provides space for students who are dreamers and want to change the world,” said Frampton. “We want to energize, strengthen, and encourage their greatest thoughts. HSU is a place that will give them fuel, inspire them, and see the value of their ideas, talent, and gifts.”

Curriculum for the program includes HSU’s foundational courses, including a First-Year Seminar, Making History: The Human Experience in America, The Religious and Philosophical Life, and Writing as Discovery. These courses encourage students to ask questions about God, themselves, and their neighbors.

Fellows will also design, build, strengthen, present and share their portfolios. Portfolios will align fellows’ passions, talents and big ideas with their academic pursuits. Frampton hopes the portfolio will not only help students get jobs but also align their future career with their passion.

The program also includes extra-curricular aspects including aesthetics and service practicums, and work-study and internship opportunities. In the aesthetics practicum, fellows will experience a variety of art as a cohort. In the service practicum, fellows will participate in service-learning projects. During their second year in the program, fellows will assist first-year students in these pursuits.

Frampton hopes the first cohort will have about 20 students, but that it will grow to two cohorts and eventually impact the HSU general education experience.
