HSU Career Services offers more employment opportunities

(ABILENE, Texas)–The Hardin-Simmons Career Services department has planned several events throughout the year, giving students more job opportunities than before. These events will teach students the necessary tools to thrive after graduation in a professional environment.

“Our mission is to provide you with expert guidance and all the tools you need to begin and thrive in your career,” states the Career Services website. “Whether you are exploring career options, looking for a way to build your resume, or anxious about the post-grad job search process, we are here to help.”

Beginning this fall semester, Hardin-Simmons partnered with a comprehensive career platform called Handshake. Over 800 other schools across America are currently using this platform. Handshake gives a space for those who have applied for a position to provide their review regarding the interview and hiring process.

Another popular section of the site allows anyone to post a question for others to answer. For example, there is a question posted asking how to break into journalism with five responses from journalists all over the United States giving their own advice.

“It’s giving our students a lot more opportunities than they had before,” said Director of Career Services Alyssa Rasco.

Along with the new Handshake platform, the Career Services staff plans several events each year to teach students essential tools for thriving in a professional environment. This year, there have been two exciting new events added called Adulting 101 and Suit Up with JCPenney.

Adulting 101 is a five-part series held in a TED Talk style. Each event will last one hour and cover the four topics of career, finance, self, and community. This series will help students learn how to start a budget, find a job, and even pay back student loans. Although these topics are about what happens after graduation, students of all ages are encouraged to attend.

Every time a student attends an Adulting 101 event, his or her name will be entered to win several prizes such as the $40 valued cap, gown, and tassel package or even a $105-150 valued diploma frame. For the first Adulting 101 event, the lucky winner will receive a voucher for a free suit from JCPenney as part of the Suit Up event.

The local JCPenney’s store located in the Mall of Abilene is partnering with several colleges around the Big Country, including Hardin-Simmons University for its Suit Up event. Students must bring their Student IDs during 6:00-9:00 p.m. to receive the discounts available. All students and alumni can attend this event but must sign in upon arrival to receive the discount voucher. Sephora will be available for a free mini makeover, and the salon will be open for a free hair consultation and haircare mini.
