Equipping Students for Success

Hardin-Simmons University’s Academic Center for Enrichment, better known as the ACE, will be hosting a series of workshops titled “M.A.P. Your Success to Graduation” this fall semester. Through various speakers, discussions, and group tutoring sessions, the ACE’s goal is to equip students with the tools and resources that lead to academic success.

“We want to provide a place where students feel safe and comfortable to ask for academic support,” shared Carol Krueger, Director of Undergraduate Advising and Disability Services at Hardin-Simmons. “My hope is connections are made that help our students realize the faculty and staff want nothing more than to support student success.”

Workshop themes were chosen to provide the most applicable needs students face in a college academic setting. The ACE wants to bless students by sharing academic and life advice, as well as prayers and encouragement from faculty and staff.

The series kicked off on September 21 with a message from President Eric Bruntmyer about time management. The president gave practical advice about task prioritization. He shared that time management is one of the most important life skills one can have and encouraged each student to practice it daily.

Academic Center for Enrichment calendarPresident Bruntmyer also shared an analogy about why students should prioritize their time, “Our time is limited like the volume of an aquarium. The placement of the items within the aquarium matters. If you have large rocks, sand, and water that must fit inside the aquarium, you must identify your ‘big rocks,’ or highest priorities, so that they can be placed first. The sand, your ‘smaller priorities,’ can then be filled into the cracks between the larger rocks.”

“Finally, the water, or priorities that are the lowest on our list, can be poured where it seeps into the sand and fills up any extra space. If these items are not placed into the aquarium in that order, you will find yourself with an aquarium that is overflowing. Likewise, we must strategically prioritize our values and tasks so that we can make the best use of our time.”

The ACE will host more workshops this fall and encourages all students to attend. See the flyer for upcoming workshops and watch out for more announcements on the ACE Canvas page!
