Dr. Doug McIntyre named to the Charles and Pauline Brinkley Endowed Chair of Business

January 24, 2022 Mary Burke

Dr. McIntyre is a professor of business administration in the Kelley College of Business and Professional Studies at Hardin-Simmons University. Since coming to HSU, his impact can be found in the classroom, on the softball field, and in the countless campus projects and buildings in which he has had a voice in. In what (scant) space is not taken up by books in his office, one will see photographs and memorabilia referencing his love for rodeo and coaching. Ever pushing forward, Dr. McIntyre is a compassionate educator who equips those around him for success.

Since his undergraduate years, he always envisioned being a teacher and coach, but, as Dr. McIntyre said, “God’s roadmap is always a little different.” Prior to joining HSU, Dr. McIntyre spent 23 years in banking and financial services, focusing on trust and commercial banking. He balanced 50–60-hour work weeks with a family, community involvement, and graduate school.

2007 women’s softball team

In 2002, having freshly earned his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, Dr. McIntyre joined HSU as an adjunct. He became a full-time professor in 2005 and, in 2006, he was invited to help coach the women’s softball team. “Everything I did in banking prepared me to teach and coach. Mentoring, counseling, understanding the importance of direct communication, I learned these in the bank.”  In 2007, his first year as an assistant coach, the team won the ASC conference title. In addition, in 2010, his youngest daughter Shelby joined the softball team and he was able to coach her through her collegiate softball career. Reflecting back on his coaching experience with his daughter, Dr. McIntyre said, “It was a highlight of my career with HSU. I was privileged to be a part of that.”

Dr. McIntyre teaches classes on HR management, real estate, principles of marketing, sports management, and more. In all his classes, he takes the time to teach his students “soft lessons that will have a large impact,” like the importance of timeliness, public speaking, and office politics. Does he have an Emily Post book dogeared and flagged with post-it notes that he references? You better believe it. Dr. McIntyre truly values a holistic learning experience, where he encourages students to develop successful habits along with general knowledge.

When asked about the best part of his job, Dr. McIntyre said, “Seeing a student, a young person, strive to reach their potential is the absolute best. I care deeply for their success.” He then added, “However, the most disappointing part is when I see wasted potential.” He said his faith is what “gives [him] empathy and tenderness to do the tough things, like having that talk with the student who is failing.”

Dr. McIntyre has been involved in various building projects in the community and on campus. Of what projects he is most proud of, he cited the $55 million upgrades to the Taylor County Expo Center, which took place while he was president of the board of directors of the expo center. As for campus projects, he is proud of the work and collaboration that took place in the construction of the Fletcher Fitness Center, Houston-Lantrip Center, and phase one of the campus apartments.

When not working, serving his church, or sitting on a board, Dr. McIntyre can be found with his horses. Dr. McIntyre, who calls riding and roping his version of golf, enjoys roping steers and is improving his skills to be competitive as a steer roper.

Charles and Pauline Brinkley

Dr. McIntyre was awarded the Charles and Pauline Brinkley Endowed Chair of Business during the fall 2021 semester. It is fitting Dr. McIntyre has been linked to the Brinkleys, as his career and professional affiliations mirror those of Charles and Pauline Brinkley. Mr. Brinkley served over 60 years in banking, held numerous positions within the Texas Bankers Association, and served on multiple boards, including the executive board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the board of trustees and development at Hardin-Simmons University. Like Mr. Brinkley, Dr. McIntyre has had an illustrious career in banking and has served on multiple boards, past and present, including chairing the boards of the Wealth Management and Trust Division of the Texas Bankers Association, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, Abilene Sports Alliance, and the Expo Center of Taylor County.

Pauline Brinkley was a teacher, community activist, church leader, and remembered for encouraging young people to read. Like Mrs. Brinkley, Dr. McIntyre is a dedicated teacher, active in his community and church, and encourages his students to pick up a book. Dr. McIntyre is known to provide booklists to his students to broaden perspectives and provide extra credit opportunities. These books range from the classics to modern examinations of the business world.

Dr. Doug McIntyre

Dr. Robert Tucker, Dean of the Kelley College of Business and Professional Studies, said, “Dr. McIntyre’s banking background, combined with his Ph.D. and excellence in teaching, makes him the ideal choice for this honored chair position.” In fact, Dr. McIntyre has been named the Kelley College of Business Outstanding Educator three times.

When asked what advice he has for current HSU students, Dr. McIntyre shared, “Invest in yourself and don’t quit. A little time now will pay off in the long run.”

Congratulations on being the recipient of the Charles and Pauline Brinkley Endowed Chair of Business, Dr. McIntyre! The honor is well deserved.
