Celebrating Black History Month Together

February 8, 2022 Jaidyn Kamplain

The celebration of Black History Month kicked off at chapel on Tuesday, February 1 with an extended time of worship and prayer from Dr. Travis Craver. As Associate Vice President for Spiritual Formation, Dr. Craver and his team have constructed a chapel schedule to allow students to celebrate HSU’s diversity as well as the contribution of African and Black Americans to the development of the United States.

Remembering history and the desire to grow in appreciating God’s good gift of ethnic diversity, specifically the manifestation of it in our nation we come to understand, is for all of us,” stated Dr. Craver. “February can be a significant time in which we reflect, seek each other’s presence, worship, and express gratitude for our life together.”

The chapel schedule will be as follows:

February 1 Worship Chapel with focus on music and prayer as an HSU family

February 8 – Guest Speaker: Chief of Police, Marcus Dudley

February 15 – Guest Speaker: Brandon Osborne, Executive Director of Abilene Youth Sports Authority

February 22 – Chapel featuring Proven

In addition to chapel celebrations, organizations such as Proven, SABERs, and ResLife will be hosting events throughout the month of February to recognize Black History Month.

Dr. Travis Craver

Dr. Craver believes recognizing Black History Month during our weekly chapel service will give students the chance to both celebrate the historical and current significance of Black Americans and see God’s work in our lives for His glory.

Dr. Craver shared that Black History Month is a season of remembrance that serves a purpose to prepare us for Christ. “As a believer, I see racial and ethnic diversity as an expression of God’s manifold beauty,” stated Dr. Craver. He shared that God is so great that no single race or culture can display God’s greatness; we need all our various perspectives and experiences to express the vastness of God and see Him more fully.

Celebrate with the campus and attend chapel from afar through our live stream, every Tuesday at 9:30 am.
