(ABILENE, Texas) The Baptist Student Ministries (BSM) held their annual Howdy party yesterday to welcome first year students to campus and inform them about opportunities to serve on and off campus. Students enjoyed ice cream floats and entered drawings for giveaways.

Spiritual Formation

The Howdy Party had several tables where students could learn more about how the BSM helps students develop in their faith, including Fish Food, Reach, Night of Worship, and Woven/Broven.

The BSM offers a special program for first year students called Fish Food. Upperclassmen mentor and teach first year students, leading a Bible study and helping them get connected with the BSM. The first Fish Food meeting is next Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m.

Reach is a new weekly program where students gather for Bible study on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in Moody 108. Reach is meant to be a safe space for skeptics and those who want to ask honest questions about Christianity. This event has some elements of a worship service and other elements that are more focused on open discussion.

Night of Worship is a monthly event held the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in Logsdon chapel. Students enjoy worship, preaching, pancakes, and coffee. Woven Women’s Ministry and Broven Men’s Ministry both meet on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m.

The BSM offers a free noon lunch every Wednesday of the fall semester. The meal is provided by local churches and HSU departments.

In addition to ministering to students, the BSM reaches out to the community and the world. The BSM has several ministry teams which students can join: International Student Ministry; Community and Church Engagement; Small Groups; Prayer Ministry; Global Connections; Freshman Ministry; and Campus Outreach and Evangelism.

The Cowboy Kids’ Christmas Party is a ministry to students in the Abilene area. HSU students are partnered with one or two children for the day. The kids get to enjoy a meal in the HSU cafeteria, games and crafts, and Christmas presents. The BSM also helps partner students with local churches who need volunteers for their Disciple Now, a weekend of worship, Bible study, and activities.

BSM takes a fall break mission trip and a spring break mission trip to South Padre Island to serve pancakes, give rides, and share the gospel with the people they meet there.

GoNow is an organization that partners BSM students with international and domestic missions opportunities. Students can serve for a week in the summer up to an entire semester. To stay up to date on all the BSM’s events, follow their social media accounts found here.
