New Club Sports at HSU
HSU Club Sports Grow in Popularity and Recognition
In October, Hardin-Simmons University participated in their first ever Table Tennis Tournament. During the tour, HSU competed against Texas A&M, UNT, UT Arlington, TCU, Texas Tech, UT Dallas, UT Austin, and 13-time nation champions Texas Wesleyan. The team even witnessed the former Chinese world champion table tennis player in action!
Over the past few years, Club Sports have become increasingly popular at Hardin-Simmons. Club Table Tennis, for instance, was formed at the beginning of Fall 2017. Other club sports, such as tennis, bass-fishing, lacrosse, and chess, have also recently become staples of university life.
According to the HSU club Sport Handbook, “The Club Sports program is designed to serve individual interests in different sports and recreational activities. These interests can be competitive, recreational, or instructional in nature, as Clubs may represent the University in intercollegiate competition or conduct intra-Club activities such as practice, instruction, socialization, and tournament play.”
Club sports, such as table tennis, serve far more than merely competitive purposes. Club sports give students an opportunity to represent HSU, experience fellowship, and even give back to the community through various service projects.
Dr. Dave Rozeboom, Vice President for Student Life, said, “Club Sports are a wonderful opportunity for students to compete with other schools and represent HSU.”
Club Sports provides students with an outlet to pursue their passions. Over the past few years, club sports have grown exponentially at Hardin-Simmons. Dr. Rozeboom commented, “We anticipate a number of other clubs starting in the spring or next year, especially with the onboarding of the new fitness center.”
Currently, club sports are directed by John McCormick, Director of Student Activities, Club Sports, and Summer Camps.
