Tips for New Transfers – One Transfer to Another
The process of entering a new college is always hard: You don’t know who the people are, where classes are, and even where to sleep. This can be even harder for someone transferring somewhere that may be radically different from the college you were used to.
Landry French is a junior majoring in English. He transferred to HSU and can speak from first-hand experience.
These were the problems I faced when I transferred into HSU. I got lost all the time; I didn’t know who anybody was; I had no idea about anything happening on campus. To save you the trouble I went through, here are some tips for fellow transfers going into HSU to help save some stress in the transitional process:
First, walk around campus and figure out where your classes are ahead of time. You may have to cross from one side of campus to another between classes, so learn where you need to go before your first day. Planning a route helps to memorize where you need to go if you aren’t good at directions (like I am).
Next, look at what activities are available on campus. You may see an extracurricular you want to join, a performance you want to see, or a school event that will have lots of people to meet. Immerse yourself, meet your fellow students, and try new things. Make college not just about learning – have fun with it!
Finally, be mindful of your money. Whether you live on-campus or off-campus, it’s smart to be aware of how much you spend. Try to find ways to cut down on costs for things like books, food, or extras so you can be sure you can spend money on things you want to—or don’t! Save that money for a rainy day. Don’t be afraid to apply for scholarships.
Now that you know some ways to make your transition easier, it should be a breeze coming into HSU. Learning at Hardin-Simmons is an unforgettable experience. Make the most of it, and you’ll have a wonderful time.
