Strategic Learning Initiative

The transition to college is a big deal and, let’s be honest, challenging. At Hardin-Simmons University, we provide resources to empower you during this transition and continue to provide resources throughout your time as a student and beyond.

HSU provides academic support to every student with free tutoring, writing workshops, and sessions on everything from time management to developing study skills. HSU amplifies these resources with its Strategic Learning Initiative, a 1-credit course available for any student to enroll in.

On average, 1 in 3 students finish their first semester of college with a 2.0 GPA or less. Take advantage of the resources offered at HSU, and don’t be a statistic!

The Strategic Learning Initiative (SLI) is a semester-long course dedicated to implementing the skills and habits of academic success. Students who enroll in SLI learn how to prioritize, study, communicate, and more at the start of their collegiate experience. Understanding and practicing these skills set you up for success immediately, making your transition to college much smoother.

The SLI also helps ensure you graduate in a timely manner, securing the financial commitment you and your family have made to attend college. As much as we don’t want to think about it, a failed course must be retaken, costing money and time you may not have budgeted for. SLI courses empower you with the skills to avoid failing a course.

HOW THE SLI CLASS WORKS

The class meets twice per week for an hour each time.

  • During the first half of class, a new learning strategy is introduced and discussed in a seminar format.
  • The second half of class is practical and used to apply the new learning strategy to other course assignments.

Each week, out of class, there is a 30-minute one-on-one meeting with your instructor or Peer Academic Coach for individualized academic support. These meetings allow for mentorship, reflection, and prayer.

BLOCK TUITION

Your block tuition is good for up to 34 credit hours per year, so SLI will cost you nothing! Use one of your credit hours to make the others count.
