In October 2017, HSU received approval from the

Abilene City Council to purchase a 22,000 square

foot building known as AbLabs from the Development

Corporation of Abilene. Located at 1325 Pine Street,

the building is just nine blocks from the southeast

corner of the main Hardin-Simmons camps. At a cost

of $1.5 million, the university purchased the building

(including equipment and furniture) for about 10%

of the original cost in 2009. While such a new building

is in pristine condition, interior work was necessary to

adapt the space to the needs of the PT Department.

By publication date, the HSU PT Department is

expected to be in their new home.

The increased space will allow the PT school to grow

enrollment from 28 to 40 students per class. With an

average starting salary of $68,000, these students

are perfectly poised, upon graduation from HSU’s

28-month program, not only to fill a critical human

need but also to stay in the Abilene area to aid the

growth of Abilene’s medical industry while also

expanding Abilene’s tax base.
