You were recently named Dean of Students. What are some of the first things you want to accomplish? To connect with various groups of students, to learn their needs an desires, and to improve their experience at HSU. Who was your role model when you were at HSU as a student? Linda Carleton, Dean of Students during my years as a student. She challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. She provided me opportunities throughout my college years to grow as a leader. How do you relax? Relax? Not sure I relax these days. However, I enjoy every moment I spend with my family. I love watching my boys play their various sports. What is your catch phrase or motto? As I begin this journey as Dean of Students, my focus is on Micah 6:8 – “Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly.” What book has changed your life? Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist – this book reminded me that there is more to life than striving to be perfect at something. My family needs me to be present with them when we are together. The same goes for the students and colleagues when I am on campus. If I focus on striving to be perfect or produce perfect work, I miss out on a greater blessing to be present with the people I love and serve. You have a lot of HSU memorabilia in your office. Can you pick one or two of your favorites and explain why they mean so much to you? It is difficult to narrow them down to just one or two. My beanie is #1. It symbolizes the start of my journey at HSU. Throughout my years of working with students, I regularly utilize the beanie to discuss the students’ beginning at HSU. Then I share my desire to see them cross the stage at graduation to receive their diploma. There are two newer items in my office that represent growth. A hard hat and piece of the old Streich tennis court signify new opportunities for HSU. My husband, Cody (’95, ’03), and I met at HSU as tennis players our freshman year. It was bittersweet to be there on demolition day. However, demolition of the courts meant construction of the new fitness center. w/Stacey Martin Stacey Martin (‘06, ‘01), was named Dean of Students in 2017.
