Mr. Wade Burroughs ’54BS , retired in 2017 after 55 years of serving in education as teacher, coach and principal in middle schools and high schools in Texas, California, and Arizona. He also served as Executive Director of “The Association for Compensatory Educators of Texas” for 17 years and “The Association for Migrant Educators of Texas” for eight years. Mr. Bill Woods ’54BM , was honored at Seagraves High School on October 14, 2017. The school dedicated the band hall as the Bill and Myrna Woods Band Hall. Woods served Seagraves ISD for 20 years. Mrs. Nancy (Burks) Davis ’55BS , has been married to Rev. William J. Davis, a Presbyterian Minister for 56 years; njbdavis1960@gmail.com. Dr. Britton Wood ’55BA , and wife, Dr. Bobbye Wood, wrote and published the book, “Marriage for the Everyday, conversation starters designed to deepen couple relationships.” Dr. Wood and his wife reside in Fort Worth; brittonw@swbell.net . Mr. F. Richard “Dick” Burt ’57BA , was honored at Trinity Institute in Tehuacana, TX on June 10, 2017 where the Johannus American Classic V Organ was dedicated in his memory. He facilitated the acquisition of the instrument, installed and finished it for its new home before his death in 2015. Concert Artist and Church Musician Eldred Marshall played the dedicatory recital and accompanied Timothy Burt’s trombone solos. Mrs. Maridell (Fisher) Fryar ’57BA , residing in Midland, is this year’s E.L. Galyean honoree. Mrs. Fryar is the former President of Texas Retired Teachers Association, serving in this role from 2012-2014. Known as an outstanding, enigmatic leader throughout TRTA, Maridell is active in her local unit (Midland ARSP) and has held all of the key state TRTA officer positions of Secretary/ Treasurer, Second Vice-President and First Vice-President. She has also led the state Finance, Public Relations and Membership committees during her tenure. The E.L. Galyean Service Award recognizes a TRTA member for outstanding and unusual service on the state level, and is named after the first Executive Director of TRTA. Mr. Galyean served in this capacity from 1980 until 1992. Dr. Bill Cathey ’58BA/’93HD , turned 85 and retired from pastoring in May after 60 years. He still serves on the Lakepointe Church staff in Rockwall. He and his wife, Opal, work with widows and widowers in the first year after losing their mates. Mr. G. “Vernon” Scott ’58BS, and his high school sweetheart Jo Ann celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 7th. Their three children, spouses, and seven grandchildren surprised them with a gala celebration party with over 200 in attendance; Skeedydob@gmail.com. 1960’s Mr. Sam Ligon ’62BS , is beginning his 15th year as Organist /Music Associate at Trinity Baptist Church, Kerrville. Prior to that he served over 50 years as minister of education, music and staff counselor for Baptist churches in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. Mrs. Johnnie Lou (Davis) Avery Boyd ’65x , wrote a biography of a West Texas icon, Roy Helen Ackers (MizCheevus, Society Editor of the Abilene Reporter-News) which was published in 2017 and virtually sold out of first printing in three months. Mrs. Vicki (Corley) Carr ’66x , spent 19 years in the classroom, teaching piano and accompanying choirs after a career in live show production, management and public relations. Retirement and grandbabies are her focus now, except that she serves as Musical Director for Texarkana Repertory Theatre, she sits on two music-related boards of directors, and is president of Arkansas Federated Music Clubs.
