Dr. Candace Wicks, Assistant Professor of Biology, joined the HSU faculty in fall 2013 after completing a four-year postdoctoral fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she used classical biochemical techniques, in combination with Drosophila genetics, to investigate the transduction of the Hedgehog signaling pathway. As a cell and molecular biologist, Dr. Wicks teaches General Biology, Advanced Cell Biology, Histology, and Introduction to Research Methods to science majors as well as Modern Concepts in Biology to non-science majors. Dr. Wicks also serves as the pre-health professions advisor for the life science students and considers academic advising and science career counseling a passion of hers.
Dr. Wicks earned her Bachelors of Science in Biology from Tougaloo College and went on to earn her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from University of Missouri-Columbia. Her doctoral research focused on chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agents to treat/prevent progesterone-dependent breast cancer. She plans to continue to her research in this topic area at HSU.
