Melissa Nicole Madeson, associate professor of Kinesiology, Health and Recreation, is a native of California. She began teaching courses at HSU in 2008. As a Division I college athlete in track and cross country, she received a B.A. in psychology and an M.S. in kinesiology from California State University, Sacramento. While personal training, teaching group exercise, and sport psychology courses at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, she earned a Ph.D. in sport and exercise psychology. With a focus on performance enhancement working with athletes as a sport and exercise psychologist she developed a passion for mental health issues. She completed an MEd in Counseling and Human Development from HSU in 2016 and is currently an LPC-Intern.
With great appreciation for health and wellness, she holds certifications in personal training (NASM and AAAI), group exercise instruction, cycling, nutrition (AAAI), yoga (RYT-200) and trauma informed yoga therapy. She is an active member of AASP (Association of Applied Sport Psychology) through conference participation, education, and hands-on work with college, high school, and recreational athletes in mental and physical health.
Madeson is an active member of Southside Baptist Church teaching Sunday school and leading prayer groups. Teaching and motivating others to enjoy God’s gift of physical, mental, and spiritual health remains her passion as part of the HSU family.
