Dr. Rosario Hall is an Associate Professor of Spanish and the head of the HSU Department of Foreign Languages. Hall came to HSU from the University of Arizona where she received her Ph.D. and was a lecturer of Spanish. She is originally from Veracruz, Mexico, were she did her undergraduate studies in Communications at the Universidad Veracruzana. In spring 2005, she graduated with an M.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from Portland State University, where she taught for four years. She was also a visiting Instructor of Spanish at Lewis and Clark College for two years. For the past 17 years Dr. Hall have taught Spanish at a college level, including Spanish-language study groups in Mexico and Spain.

Hall is a strong advocate for interdisciplinary training, and for content-based language teaching. Concurrent with her interest in language, she continues doing research in literature, cinema and cultural studies. The exchange and sharing of ideas is one of the activities that Dr. Hall values in this profession. Besides teaching language and cultural skills, Dr. Hall promotes and instills critical thinking in her classes.

In regard to her role as a teacher she expresses that “In academia we aspire to open our minds in order to increase understanding in our community, which resonates with God’s commandment of loving our fellow human beings. Today more than ever, and under the signs of Globalization, our society and communities are exposed to pluralism, diversity and multiculturalism. Often, with diversity comes tension. In this context, God’s message is of much more relevant: in order to lead a meaningful and fruitful life, we must love our neighbors, reach out to them, and engage with them in their own language.”
