Paul Harding spent his childhood in Wenham,
Massachusetts, a town close to Boston and not far from
where he now lives with his wife and two sons.
He graduated with a B.A. in English from the University
of Massachusetts, Amherst. After graduation, he was
the drummer with the rock band, Cold Water Flat (1990-
1996), which he helped form at the U. of Massachusetts. He
recorded two albums with the band and toured Europe.
After the band fell apart, he enrolled in a summer writing
course at Skidmore College, taking classes with the novelist
Marilynne Robinson (Gilead). He did his graduate work at
the University of Iowa, receiving his M.F.A. from the Iowa
He has taught fiction writing at Harvard, the Iowa
Writers’ Workshop, and Grinnell College.
He is an avid reader of 19th-century novels, theological
works (especially those of Karl Barth, 1886-1968, and John
Calvin, 1509-1564), and physics.
