In the spring of 1996, a group of residents in Lange Hall signed a petition to implement a drill team at Hardin-Simmons. Their proposal was approved the following year, and the Spurs Dance Team was born. The Spurs are celebrating their 20th fall season this weekend at Homecoming.

The team anticipates 23 alumni to join them at their annual alumni breakfast Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in Connally Missions Center.

“The Spurs are very excited to reconnect with recent grads and to meet team members from the early years of the program,” said Bailey LeRoux, Spurs Coach. “It’s a great opportunity to compare choreography and uniform styles. So much and yet so little has changed; it will be a great time to merge. It’s also an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with their original team members and catch up after the years since their final performances.”

The three-time nationally ranked Spurs Dance Team performs at all HSU football and basketball games as a vital part of HSU life. In addition to being a traditional pom squad, the team performs in various events and avenues allowing them to showcase their varied types of dance talents: jazz, tap, hip hop, and more. The Spurs perform in over 50 different events and athletic game each year on campus with a new and exciting dance at each appearance.

In March 2015, the Spurs represented Hardin-Simmons at the ADTS National Collegiate Competition in Denton, TX earning a National Runner Up rating in the Division 2 category. This is the third time in the Spurs history on campus that the team has earned a national rating.

The Spurs are a team of HSU’s leaders who seek to strengthen their walk with Christ through team fellowship. When the Spurs began performing twenty years ago, their goals were very much the same. Their first coach, Kimberly McMillon, emphasized that she wanted to provide an atmosphere conducive to knowing Jesus on a personal level as well as a place for talented girls to come together. These bonds of faith and friendship link all HSU Spurs, whether from 1997 or from 2017.
