(ABILENE, Texas)—On Tuesday, April 9, HSU’s Physician Assistant (PA) program participated in a fundraiser for their mission trip that will occur later this year. PA students sold cookies in front of Moody Center, hoping to generate more funds for their big trip to the Dominican Republic this May.

Taira Drews, a PA student, helped with the fundraiser and is serving as a contact for people who wish to make a donation. “The bake sale was very successful and we appreciate all the support,” Drews said. “We are still accepting donations as we make our final preparations for the trip.”

As part of the PA program, students must complete 50 hours of community service by volunteering in the surrounding community and participating in the yearly medical mission trip. The program visits a different place each year to help serve people in need while gaining experience in the field at the same time. One of the program’s main goals is to “provide training opportunities for PA students in rural and underserved medical setting.”

PA students travelled to Peru in the spring of 2018, where they collaborated with Buckner International. Over the course of 5 days, the team treated a total of 714 people.

The students are looking forward to visiting the Dominican Republic next month, where they will practice what they have learned by helping and caring for the people there.

To make a donation to the program, contact Taira Drews or Bonnie Powell.
