Night of Networking Offers Students a Unique Opportunity

HSU Career Services introduce students to professionals in a "speed networking" event.

Hardin-Simmons Career Services and the Alumni Association hosted a “Night of Networking” for current students and alumni.

The event offered students the chance to converse with professionals in a “speed networking" format. Students were put in groups of three to four and had ten-minute rotations to have “mini” meetings with alumni and other professionals.

Chloe Hochstein, junior exercise science pre-physical therapy major, said, “These types of events help prepare us for entering the job market. You have to prove yourself by your experiences, not what is on a sheet of paper.”

This was the first time an event like this has been hosted. There were 75 students in attendance, and 17 professionals participating.

Sylvie Uwimana, sophomore communication sciences and disorders major from Abilene, said, “HSU is set apart from other universities by offering an event like this because students have the opportunity to communicate with successful graduates of HSU and  hear how they were aided by HSU to get where they are now.”

Three of the professionals speaking with the students conducted the meetings via Skype.

Uwimana said, “That type of interaction better prepares me for future interviews since technology is growing. Experiencing it at the networking was good practice.”

Career Services provides students and alumni with many services that will help with career exploration and planning, writing and producing resumes, interviewing skills, and they offer a variety of career seminars and workshops throughout the year.
