John Hunt, the Director of the Baptist Student Ministry at Hardin-Simmons University, spoke in chapel service on Tuesday about the significant role that Mary, the mother of Jesus, plays in faith.

Hunt spoke about Mary saying “she was to have a child and not just any child, but the Son of God.” He said a question that must be asked is, “How does the divine mix with that which is human?”

He explained how Mary was not only the mother to Jesus but she was a disciple as well.

“She stays at the cross when others leave and she was there for the resurrection,” he said.

The crux of Hunt’s talk was that “[Mary’s] motherhood was not diminished by her discipleship and her discipleship was not diminished by her motherhood.” Hunt relates the idea about Mary to modern day Christianity. Describing himself as a “dyed-in-the-wool Baptist,” he said that “God is not going to stop calling women to the ministry. If we ignore their callings we will lose them and be worse off for it.”

He ended his talk looking back at Mary saying “Mary teaches us that it can be done. The divine can mix with the human and that the miracle that happened with her is also wrought in us.” As a college minister, Hunt said he “has got to watch woman after woman accept the call and follow what God has for them.”
