Hardin-Simmons University is hosting English as a Second Language classes for refugee families in Abilene.

The classes are offered at beginning and intermediate/advanced levels in Logsdon throughout this semester. English as a Second Language classes are being offered from October through December on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Dr. Raney Edmiston, who is teaching the classes, said that the ESL program started because several African students in Logsdon asked Dr. Don Williford if HSU could host some ESL classes for the refugees who attend their churches.

The ESL classes are open to anyone in the community who needs to learn English as a second language. At this time, the classes mostly have recently arrived refugees from Africa.  About 10-15 students attend the beginner class and five to 12 students attend the intermediate/advanced class.

“We have wonderful volunteers of HSU students and employees who are vital to the program working successfully,”  noted Dr. Edmiston.
